Compress an image to 20KB

This page opens the image compressor with a 20 KB target already set. Use it for strict forms and small profile photos, then check that the face or text is still readable before you submit.

When a 20KB limit is the right target

A 20 KB limit is usually the strictest option on a form. It suits a small profile photo, a thumbnail or an older portal that still measures uploads in kilobytes.

Avoid using 20 KB for a printed photo or a detailed scanned document. Once detail is removed it cannot be restored, and an official copy needs readable text and a recognisable face.

Keep a 20KB photo readable

Start with a sharp, well-lit image and crop close to the subject. A plain background, clean edges and no small text give the encoder more room to keep the important parts.

The compressor lowers quality first and then resolution if the target still cannot be reached. It shows that fallback in the result, so you can decide whether to accept a smaller image or ask the portal for more room.

  • Use JPG unless the form explicitly accepts WebP.
  • Do not upscale a small image before compressing it.
  • Avoid repeatedly saving and re-compressing the same file.

Check before you upload

Open the downloaded file, not just the preview. Confirm that the face, signature strokes and any required text are still clear, and that the portal accepts the format.

  • The downloaded size is at or under the limit.
  • The face or signature is not blurred beyond use.
  • The file format matches the portal rule.
  • You keep a copy of the original image.

20KB, 50KB or 100KB?

20 KB is for the tightest limits. 50 KB usually keeps more detail for a form photo, and 100 KB leaves more room for small text or a scanned page. Use the largest size the portal allows rather than compressing further than necessary.

Other KB targets

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Add a clean source image

Use the sharpest photo you have. A simple background and a tight crop leave more detail at a very small file size.

  2. Step 2

    Keep the 20KB target

The target is already set to 20 KB. Choose JPG unless the form explicitly accepts WebP.

  3. Step 3

    Check the comparison

Drag the comparison slider and look at the face or signature. If it is too soft, use a smaller crop or a larger allowance.

  4. Step 4

    Download and verify

Confirm the downloaded file is under 20 KB and that the portal accepts its format.

Frequently asked questions

Can a photo still look good at 20KB?

A small photo can look acceptable, but fine detail will be reduced. A simple background, good lighting and a tight crop help more than any setting. Check the face at 100% before uploading.

Which format should I use for a 20KB image?

JPG is the safest choice for older forms and is usually efficient at small sizes. WebP can be smaller when the portal accepts it. PNG is lossless and ignores the target, so it is a poor choice for a strict KB limit.

Why does my image stay above 20KB?

Detailed textures, noise and a large pixel size all keep the file larger. The tool lowers quality and then resolution until it fits, but a complex image may need a smaller crop. The result panel tells you when the target cannot be reached.

Is 20KB enough for a signature?

It can be, especially for a small signature box. Use dark ink on white paper and crop close to the signature. If the strokes break up, use a larger KB allowance or a smaller pixel size.
